Intervention:

This intervention aims to evoke nostalgic memories to alleviate negative emotions associated with loneliness, enhance feelings of social connectedness and life meaning, thereby mitigating loneliness. The intervention will be conducted weekly over five weeks (approximately 90 minutes per session), with each group comprising 5-8 older adults. Activities will take place in an activity room at the participating community centre, which provides a private setting. Session 1: Understanding Nostalgia and Its Benefits. Employing the Reflective Task Event Method, participants will read definitions of nostalgia and be guided to recall a key event that evokes nostalgic feelings. A "memory jar" will be created, with each participant writing down cherished recollections inside. They will be invited to share their nostalgic reflections, aiming to foster deeper connections among participants through shared experiences. Sessions 2, 3 and 4: Music/Photographs/Meaningful Objects and Nostalgia. Sessions 2, 3 and 4 will respectively utilise music, photographs and meaningful objects as tools to evoke participants' nostalgic memories. Session 2 will feature a playlist of songs popular during participants' youth, selected through a co-design process. In Sessions 3 and 4, participants will share stories and nostalgic feelings associated with personal photographs or meaningful objects. Each session will explore how music/photographs/meaningful objects influence their emotions and the role these narratives play in shaping their life journeys. Enable participants to revisit cherished memories. Session 5: Reaffirm the benefits of nostalgia and encourage the cultivation of reflective habits. Review previously discussed advantages of nostalgia. Encourage participants to develop personal strategies for integrating nostalgia into daily life. Finally, celebrate the journey participants have undertaken throughout the course.

Randomization Procedure (please state who generates the random number sequence and by what method):

Randomisation will be performed at the community centre level rather than at the individual participant level to avoid contamination between the intervention and control groups. The six participating community centres will be randomised into the two groups in a 1:1 ratio, with all eligible participants recruited from the same centre assigned to the same group accordingly. Group allocation will be determined based on a random sequence generated by an independent statistician using a computer-based randomiser.

Blinding:

Recruitment of the participants will be conducted by one research assistant (RA1), whilst another research assistant (RA2), who will be blinded to group allocation, will assess the primary and secondary outcomes. Blinding the participants and facilitators will be difficult due to the nature of the nostalgia intervention. Participants will be reminded not to disclose their intervention status to others at any point during the study
