Objectives of Study: |
Mental fatigue is a psychobiological state induced by prolonged, high-intensity cognitive activity, characterized by subjective feelings of exhaustion and lack of energy. A substantial body of empirical research has confirmed that mental fatigue negatively affects action anticipation. However, existing studies show inconsistencies regarding the behavioral outcomes (reaction time and accuracy) of mental fatigue on athletes' action anticipation performance, and lack an effective interpretation of its underlying processes. Secondly, current research has largely focused on the effects of mental fatigue on action anticipation performance based solely on kinematic information, while neglecting contextual prior information. When the action anticipation task shifts from relying on single-source kinematic information to requiring the integration of multiple sources of information, the impact of mental fatigue on action anticipation performance and on information integration remains systematically underexplored. This project incorporates contextual prior information into an action anticipation task, and employs drift-diffusion modeling, electroencephalography (EEG), and multivariate pattern classification to investigate the temporal characteristics of brain processing underlying the effects of mental fatigue on information integration during action anticipation in table tennis players. |

Blinding: |
A double-blind design was implemented wherein both participants and intervention administrators were blinded to the experimental conditions. Participants remained unaware of the study's specific hypotheses throughout the investigation, and this concealment was maintained until study completion. The intervention administrators, serving as research assistants, were unaware of the research objectives and were solely responsible for implementing the prescribed intervention protocols. |

Data collection and Management (A standard data collection and management system include a CRF and an electronic data capture: |
To ensure the quality, security, and traceability of all data in this study, the following data management system has been established, covering the entire process from data generation to archiving. (1) Data Collection Behavioral data: Automatically collected and recorded by the E?Prime 3.0 software program, generating raw data files (e.g., .edat format). EEG data: Automatically collected by a 64?channel ERP recording and analysis system (manufactured by a German company), generating raw data files (.cnt format). All data files are named using the participant’s unique identification number (ID) at the time of creation. No personally identifiable information (e.g., name, student ID) is used. (2) Management of Source Data and Files The source data of this study include all raw, unaltered first?hand records, specifically: raw behavioral data files generated by E?Prime, raw EEG data files, etc. Electronic source data management: All electronic source data are backed up by the data entry personnel promptly after collection to a dedicated, password?protected encrypted hard drive for this study. The storage path is organized by the hierarchy "Participant ID → Data type → Collection date" to ensure a clear structure. Paper source data management: All paper questionnaires and record forms are immediately labeled with the participant ID and collection date by the researcher after collection, and stored in a locked filing cabinet under the care of a designated person. (3) Data Collection and Entry (Recording) Personnel Data collectors: Members of the research team who have received uniform training. They are responsible for operating the E?Prime program, EEG equipment, and questionnaires, ensuring standardized data collection at the source. (4) Data Verification System First verification (completeness check): Immediately after completing data transcription or preprocessing, the data entry personnel shall verify whether the number of data entries corresponds completely with the participant IDs, and check for obvious missing values or outliers. Second verification (accuracy check): A second researcher who did not participate in the initial data entry shall randomly select no less than 20% of the total sample size and compare the electronic data with the paper source data or raw data files to ensure the accuracy of transcription and processing. The verification results shall be documented and filed. Final verification (database locking): After all data have been collected and preliminary analyses completed, the principal investigator shall conduct a final review of the entire database. Once approved without errors, the database will be locked. The locked database constitutes the final analysis dataset. Any subsequent modifications require a formal request from the principal investigator, along with a documented reason for the modification. |
