Objectives of Study:

Families of autistic children, especially those with low incomes, are significantly impacted by COVID-19. Parents have lower feelings of dispositional hope and psychological well-being compared to their neurotypical counterparts. As a result, this project will build the resilience of parents (N=800) through resilience-enhancement program (P-REP for their parents is provided by registered counsellors). In addition, we will examine the effectiveness of resilience program by evaluating parents’ resilience before and after intervention. We also investigate whether parental styles, parents' self-compassion level, parental stress, parents' coping strategies, parents' personalities, and parents' self-efficacy would moderate the intervention outcomes. We hypothesize that the intervention would improve parental resilience and reduce parenting distress. We also hypothesize that it would enhance parents' self-compassion and improve their perceptions of their children’s behaviors (e.g., fewer behavioral problems, more prosocial behaviors, and better peer relationships).

纳入标准:

所有參加者均須符合以下資格: (a) 會說粵語; (b) 被診斷為自閉症譜系兒童的主要照顧者; (c) 康納-戴維森復原力量表-中文版(CD-RISC-25-中文)復原力分數低於80,以避免天花板效應(Connor & Davidson, 2003); (d) 未被診斷出患有任何精神疾病,包括但不限於焦慮症、憂鬱症和精神分裂症。兒童的其他納入標準包括: (a) 年齡介於 4 歲至 11 歲(含)之間; (b) 被診斷為自閉症譜系; (c) 沒有嚴重的兒童疾病,例如腦性麻痺、中風或雷特氏症候群。如果父母在研究的年齡範圍內有多個自閉症孩子,他們會被要求關注對家庭影響最大的孩子(Rillotta et al., 2012)。

Inclusion criteria

All participants should meet the following inclusion criteria: (a) Cantonese-speaking; (b) the primary caregiver of a child who had been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum; (c) resilience scores less than 80 on the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-Chinese Version (CD-RISC-25-Chinese), to avoid ceiling effects (Connor & Davidson, 2003); (d) had not been diagnosed with any psychiatric disorders, including but not limited to anxiety disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Additional inclusion criteria for children included: (a) aged from four to 11 years (inclusive); (b) had been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum; (c) had no severe childhood illness, such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or Rett syndrome. If the parents have more than one autistic child within the study’s age range, they are asked to focus on the child who exerted the most impact on their family (Rillotta et al., 2012).

Intervention:

Our resilience intervention has eight weekly sessions, each lasting for 60 minutes. The intervention is designed to teach parents of autistic children knowledge about autism, stress management techniques, and a variety of coping strategies to use when encountering challenges of parenting autistic children, especially regarding undesired and uncomfortable feelings. The first two sessions aim to equip parents with autism knowledge and educate them in regard to effective ways to interact with their children. These two sessions are delivered by direct instructions and role-plays. The contents of the following five sessions are drawn from evidence-based treatments, including CBT (Beck, 1970), ACT (Hayes et al., 2006), mindfulness (Salmon, et al., 2012), and expressive arts therapy. During these sessions, parents are introduced with appropriate ways expressing negative feelings. They also practice emotional regulation skills through various approaches under the guidance of a counselor. The last sessions allow parents to discuss and review what they learned from previous lessons. The one-hour intervention is delivered weekly for eight consecutive weeks, with three to six parents per group. Sessions are conducted by licensed counselors and social workers who were trained to implement the emotion-focused group intervention.
